Premier's Anzac Memorial Scholarship 2026 (Ref: 33/26)

Up to 18 NSW high school students will be selected to take part in a study tour of Greece and Crete, visiting historic sites linked to Australia’s military service during the Second World War.

The Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship (PAMS) offers History and Modern History students a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of Australia’s wartime experiences and reflect on the courage and sacrifice of Australian servicemen and servicewomen. The tour will include significant locations such as the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Phaleron, the Hellenic War Museum, and the battlefields of Thermopylae and Thebes, as well as key sites in Crete including the 6th Australian Division Memorial, Rethymno, and Souda Bay War Cemetery.

Previous scholarship recipients have described the experience as life changing, highlighting the strong sense of connection felt while visiting historic battlefields and memorials.

New laws to address image-based abuse and deepfakes (Ref: 22/26)

The NSW Government has introduced new laws to better protect people from image-based abuse and AI deepfakes. Expected to commence in early 2026, these laws will make it a crime to create, distribute, or threaten to create or distribute sexually explicit images, videos or audio (including deepfakes) of someone without their consent.

A person convicted of any of these new offences may face penalties of up to three years’ imprisonment or a fine of up to $11,000, or both.

Under the new reforms, a court may order a person convicted of any of these offences to delete the relevant images, videos or audio. Failure to comply with such an order may constitute a further offence, punishable by imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of up to $5,500, or both.

Protections for children and young people

These new laws form part of ongoing efforts to keep pace with emerging technologies while protecting privacy, dignity and safety. These reforms operate alongside existing protections for children and young people under 18 years of age.

Under existing criminal law, any material that depicts a person under 18 years of age in a sexually explicit manner may constitute child abuse material, including material created or altered using AI. Creating, possessing or distributing child abuse material are serious criminal offences and carry significant penalties.

Consent is not a defence in relation to child abuse material.

Implementation and reporting

Supported by upgraded systems, training and education across the NSW Government, the reforms are in the final phase of implementation.

Sexually explicit material that is created or shared, including sexually explicit material which has been altered or created by AI, should be reported to NSW Police, who have authority to investigate offences under the new laws.

Young people may also report harmful material to the eSafety Commissioner, who may:

  • require the removal of harmful content; and
  • provide advice and support to victims without the need to engage court processes.
