School Updates & Newsletters

Updated Work Placement Coordination Program Guidelines (Ref: 16/26)

The NSW Work Placement Coordination Program Guidelines have been updated to support schools and providers delivering mandatory work placement as part of industry-based HSC VET Industry Curriculum Framework (ICF) or Board Endorsed (BEC) courses.

They provide clear guidance to support the planning, coordination and delivery of work placement in line with program requirements across NSW.

Work Placement in NSW

Work placement gives senior secondary students the opportunity to develop industry skills and employability capabilities in a real workplace. It is a mandatory component of industry-based vocational education and training (VET) courses undertaken as part of the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC).

This requirement applies to students enrolled in:

  • Industry Curriculum Framework (ICF) courses
  • Board Endorsed VET Courses (BEC)

How work placement is coordinated

The Work Placement Coordination Program is jointly funded by the three school sectors. Across NSW it is coordinated by a network of Work Placement Service Providers (WPSPs). These are non-government, not-for-profit organisations contracted to manage mandatory work placements within defined service regions.

WPSPs work closely with:

  • Secondary schools
  • TAFE NSW colleges
  • EVET providers
  • Local employers and host workplaces

This coordinated approach ensures eligible HSC VET students can access quality, compliant work placement opportunities.

Guidelines

The NSW Work Placement Coordination Program Guidelines support schools and providers in delivering mandatory HSC VET work placement. The guidelines outline requirements and expectations for work placement linked to ICF and Board Endorsed VET courses delivered to secondary students.

New laws to address image-based abuse and deepfakes (Ref: 22/26)

The NSW Government has introduced new laws to better protect people from image-based abuse and AI deepfakes. Expected to commence in early 2026, these laws will make it a crime to create, distribute, or threaten to create or distribute sexually explicit images, videos or audio (including deepfakes) of someone without their consent.

A person convicted of any of these new offences may face penalties of up to three years’ imprisonment or a fine of up to $11,000, or both.

Under the new reforms, a court may order a person convicted of any of these offences to delete the relevant images, videos or audio. Failure to comply with such an order may constitute a further offence, punishable by imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of up to $5,500, or both.

Protections for children and young people

These new laws form part of ongoing efforts to keep pace with emerging technologies while protecting privacy, dignity and safety. These reforms operate alongside existing protections for children and young people under 18 years of age.

Under existing criminal law, any material that depicts a person under 18 years of age in a sexually explicit manner may constitute child abuse material, including material created or altered using AI. Creating, possessing or distributing child abuse material are serious criminal offences and carry significant penalties.

Consent is not a defence in relation to child abuse material.

Implementation and reporting

Supported by upgraded systems, training and education across the NSW Government, the reforms are in the final phase of implementation.

Sexually explicit material that is created or shared, including sexually explicit material which has been altered or created by AI, should be reported to NSW Police, who have authority to investigate offences under the new laws.

Young people may also report harmful material to the eSafety Commissioner, who may:

  • require the removal of harmful content; and
  • provide advice and support to victims without the need to engage court processes.
